Group name: Talking About Art (TAA)

Group aims: To meet and enjoy discussing all varieties of art in good company.

Mainly paintings but also sculpture, architecture, gardens and almost anything.  Members organise and present a varied programme of talks by members varying from a few minutes to 50 minutes.  Please come along the learn about artists, their works and messages, their societies and patrons.    Some members paint or create other art works but we do not do any practical work at our group events.

We fortunate to have great local galleries where art works are displayed: The Laing Art Gallery, Shipley Art Gallery in Gateshead, Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens, The Discovery Museum Newcastle and others. They contain many works by famous artists of Tyneside and the North East of England such as William Beilby (glass), Ralph Hedley (painter), Thomas Richardson (cabinet maker & painter), Norman Cornish (coal miner & painter), Thomas Bewick (wood carver), The Ashington Group (pitmen painters) and many more.

All welcome. No prior knowledge skills or experience is needed. All you need is curiosity and willingness to look, learn and chat ... and enjoy tea and biscuits.  We are a lively, friendly group.

Our group leader also presents lectures and tours at the Laing Art Gallery including their recent highly successful Turner Exhibition. More usually, as a Great North Museum volunteer, our Group Leader is a tour guide or the gallery’s Picture of the Month Programme every Saturday morning at 11.00am – it’s free - dates are emailed to our group.

Group meetings: usually monthly in-person (with Zoom hybrid) meetings in our u3a meeting rooms.

More information: Please contact our Group Leader, Catherine Stevenson, using email contact above.
