Becoming a member of Newcastle u3a is not like joining your local gym or social club and simply paying a membership fee in order to receive certain benefits. It is about joining a charitable, not-for-profit organisation in which every member is relied on to do what they can to support each other in order to get the most out of their retirement.
Every member is asked to consider how they can contribute to the smooth running of the u3a, as well as taking advantage of its many benefits. Getting more involved brings its own rewards too, in terms of friendship, being part of a collaborative team, and having a real sense of purpose and achievement.
All of the key roles mentioned in the “Our Structure” page are supported by other volunteer members. But the more volunteers who come forward, the more we can achieve as a u3a. To express your interest in any of these roles or to ask about current vacancies, please contact our Volunteer Co-ordinators via our Really Useful Group: Really Useful Group RUG (email contact)
Volunteering need not be a chore. It can be just another way to make friends, have fun and get the most out of being a member.
Here are some ideas of ways in which you can get involved
1. Telling your family and friends about the u3a and encouraging them to become a member
2. Setting up a new interest group, or offering to be the deputy for an existing group.
3. Marketing and publicity tasks, including creating content and posting on social media, and attending promotional events to keep members informed and engaged, and to help attract new members.
4. Administration support, including finance tasks, counting cash, buying supplies, providing IT support, and looking after our offices.
5. Member support, including welcoming members and visitors to our monthly meetings, and providing refreshments.
6. Assisting our Business Secretary to review and update our key policy documents, many of which are essential to retaining our charitable status.
