Group name: Industrial History.

Group aims: To meet, socialise, learn about our rich British industrial heritage - once world leaders in the first industrial revolution.

We explore a variety of topics, from the industries which drove the industrial development of the North East to tide mills and the development of windmills, the history of spectacles, the modern sewing machine and the development of interchangeable parts in large-scale manufacturing, coal mining, shipbuilding, ship repairing, shipbreaking, marine-engine building, British canals  .... and many others.

We recognise that these industries, whilst employing us and bringing us new technology, also created dreadful poverty, squalor and pollution for most of us until new health, safety and environmental regulations dramatically improved our circumstances particularly in the late-20th century.

Group meetings: usually monthly in-person meetings in our Newcastle u3a meeting rooms. Zoom also available.  Occasionally we arrange field visits. New members are welcome but please let our group leader know that you would like to attend and that we have space for you. All our events are informal and friendly.

More information: please contact Geoff Brown, our Group Leader by email above. Thank you.
