From its formation though mergers in the early 19th century, its might as a prolific builder of the most innovative shipping in the early 20th century to its demise in the 1990’s. The company has been a massive influence on the history of the City of Newcastle and the Tyne. It employed huge numbers, generated income for the area and influenced shipbuilding across the world. The behemoth that was Swan Hunter may be no more but its influence on new technologies continues. Our local world famous shipyard founded 1852. Built the world beating RMS Mauretania in 1907 ... biggest, fastest Atlantic passenger liner. An interesting and varied history for anyone with Geordie, maritime, engineering interests or ancestry. All welcome.
